This project is developing the new Rollie Miles Recreation Centre - a vibrant community hub to serve as a replacement for Scona Pool, inspire local recreation participation and showcase how a new facility can respond to climate change pressures.

Project Update - May 2022

Funding is in place to complete the preliminary design of the Rollie Miles Recreation Centre. Procurement of an architect and engineering design team is underway and anticipated to be completed in Summer 2022.

Public engagement will play an important role in developing the design for the new Recreation Centre. The project team will be connecting with the community on engagement opportunities in the near future.

Detailed design and construction are currently unfunded.

About the Project

The Rollie Miles Recreation Centre will be a small recreation facility that responds to the facility assessment, demographics and community needs. The facility will replace Scona Pool which is nearing the end of its lifecycle.  The project is currently funded for the planning and preliminary design. Detailed design and construction are currently unfunded.

The planned location for the new facility is identified in the Rollie Miles Park Master Plan (20MB). While this project is separate from the Rollie Miles District Park Renewal project, both project teams maintain close communication and recognize coordination is important for design alignment, community engagement and project success.

Based on past community consultation, this recreation centre should  include the following features:

  • Fitness area
  • Gymnasium
  • Multi-purpose room
  • Aquatic element with a lane and teaching pool
  • Multipurpose court to support basketball, ball/roller hockey, toddler cycling, and other uses

The project includes the eventual demolition of Scona Pool and the City-owned building currently leased by the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues. Both these facilities are nearing the end of their lifecycle.

The existing tennis courts are planned to be rebuilt further west to allow sufficient space for the Recreation Centre and related amenities.

A new signalized intersection at 104 Street and 71 Avenue will provide access to a new parking lot (~186 stalls) situated adjacent to the new Recreation Centre.
