Park Design
Sports Fields
The design of the park aims to provide the residents of Chappelle community and students of Garth Worthington School with an attractive open space for active and passive recreation. The base-level design has been created with input from the Edmonton Public School Board, sports fields operations, maintenance and bookings. The sports field development for school and public use is the focus of the park development, however when not in scheduled use, these flat open spaces provide an opportunity for free play activities such as frisbee, informal ball games or a community event or gathering.
Landscape
The landscape of Chappelle East Park will include a mix of ornamental tree planting and naturalized groves consisting of native trees and grasses. Naturalized landscapes aid with maintaining ecological diversity in urban environments, provide habitat and the long grasses will aid with cleaning stormwater run-off by trapping particulate matter before it runs into city stormwater infrastructure. The naturalized groves might also be useful as an educational focus for the school.
A 3m wide asphalt shared-use path will provide access through the park from adjoining streets and include a walkway link to the school. Some seating is also proposed adjoining the pathway.
The park design also includes a location for a possible future shared level development, such as a playground or similar community features as per the UPMP. Shared level development is not part of this base-level development project.
